Holy cow! Apple sold 60,000 iPhones in a day in Korea!
Posted by matblogger in Tech News, gadgets on December 5th, 2009
Yep that’s right – 1 day, 60,000 iPhones in Korea. That’s considered really good compared to sales of about only 5000 in China during the first week! Anyone has the numbers for *ehem* Malaysia?
Here’s an extract from the report from International Business Times:
KT priced the 32-gigabyte iPhone 3GS at 369,000 won ($317) for customers subscribing to monthly plans based on the basic rate of 45,000 won ($38). Subscribers paying 65,000 won ($56) in basic rates can have the iPhone for 264,000 won ($227), while premium users signing up for monthly plans based on a 132,000 won ($113) basic rate could have the phones for free.
The 8-gigabtye iPhones were priced at 132,000 won ($113) for subscribers signed on the 45,000 won ($38) monthly plans.
As iPhone made its formal debut in China on October 30 through China Unicom, South Korea is one of the last major countries in Asia to get the iPhone which is also on sale in Japan, India and Australia.
Way to go Apple!

Is it really worthwhile to upgrade to iPhone 3.1?
Posted by matblogger in gadgets on September 16th, 2009

Hope you all had a chance to read up on my roundup on the latest iPhone version 3.1 as well as iTunes 9.0. Now that all the excitement around it has abated, I have been reading quite a bit about some of the quirks associated with this new firmware update. Its never surprising to hear that a new firmware update has some issues but some of them I have been reading doesn’t make Apple look good at all. Apple should have been more careful before releasing the iPhone firmware update version 3.1. Here are some of the issues that have been reported in Apple’s discussion forums.

A roundup of iTunes 9.0 and iPhone OS 3.1 – part 2
Posted by matblogger in Software, Tips and Tricks, gadgets on September 11th, 2009
This is a continuation of A roundup of iTunes 9.0 and iPhone OS 3.1 – part 1. In the previous post we saw some of the neat (and not so neat) stuff that comes with iTunes 9.0. So what’s new with iPhone OS 3.1 then? Well before you install iPhone OS 3.1 you will need to download iTunes 9.0. Once you’ve done that then you got to of course download iPhone OS 3.1 (which is a pretty huge file) and this would probably take you quite some time if you’re on Streamyx – how surprising (trying to keep a straight face here).

A roundup of iTunes 9.0 and iPhone OS 3.1 – part 1
Posted by matblogger in Software, gadgets on September 10th, 2009
The entire blogosphere is buzzing with information right from Apple’s new range of iPods, Steve Jobs’ health and the latest and greatest iTunes 9.0 – of course with a little mention of iPhone OS 3.1. Somehow I feel that the iPods and iTunes have taken the limelight in comparison to Apple’s latest firmware release for the iPhone. I had anticipated not many drastic changes to version 3.1 and my assumption proved to be correct. Subtle changes have been made which I will be discussing in a while, but more importantly lets discuss iTunes 9.0 first.

Why I love my maxis iPhone 3G S
Posted by matblogger in gadgets on August 5th, 2009
I finally got my iPhone 3G S from maxis on the 31st of July. Luckily I booked my unit at the maxis center in Queensbay Mall in Penang and even though they only opened at 10.30 AM, there was no crowd. I made my way to the maxis center expecting my unit to be ready only to be told that the number porting for my digi number wasn’t done yet. So I couldn’t get my unit on the same day. But I was so eager to get the unit that I decided to accept their inefficiency and sign up for an all new maxis number which would mean that I could get the unit on the same day! That worked well and in fact I got the unit within an hour.

Can’t wait for my Maxis iPhone 3G S to arrive!
Posted by matblogger in gadgets on July 26th, 2009
It’s been almost a month since my last post and I finally decided to get back to blogging. I’m sure many of you are aware of the hype surrounding the all new iPhone 3G S that was announced a few weeks ago. Being a devout Apple follower, I couldn’t help myself from ordering the first batch that is due to arrive in Malaysia on the 31st of July. Yes, I signed up with Maxis for a 12 months package and the phone costs me RM 1910. I have a 016 number which I am converting to Maxis, but it looks like that means I would not be able to sign up for a 24 months package and enjoy a further discount on the iPhone 3G S itself.

Is the next-gen iPhone worth the wait?
Posted by matblogger in Tech News, gadgets on June 3rd, 2009
I hope you had some time to read why it might not be the right time to buy the iPhone 3G from Maxis just yet! The short answer is that there is a very high possibility that a new iPhone is on the way. The announcement might just happen on June 8th which is less than a week away. Based on all the rumors circulating on the internet, The Green Room has put together this amazing graphical representation of the next-gen iPhone. Certainly looks mouth-watering to me!
P.S. I just stepped into the Maxis store with a friend who was looking at the iPhone 3G promotions catalog. It says “valid until June 14th” in fine print. Wonder what’s going to happen after June 14th then!

Cheaper iPhones which don’t need a data plan on the way?
Posted by matblogger in General Discussion, gadgets on May 19th, 2009
Recently I wrote about whether this is the right time to buy an iPhone 3G from Maxis. My opinion is this is not the right time keeping in mind the rumors of a new iPhone on the way. But things just seem to get even more interesting with the prospect of a cheaper iPhone model which does not need to be tied to any cellular carriers. This would mean that there might be models which could actually be bought off the shelf very much like other mobile phones.

How to become an iPhone app developer – Part Three
Posted by matblogger in Software, Tips and Tricks on April 16th, 2009
It’s been almost 3 weeks since I wrote a blog post on Malaysian Tech Blogger. Its not that I have been ignoring the blog, but recently I’ve been really busy setting up my own software solutions company – Inspiretech Solutions. The initial work has been done and I guess I can get back to blogging once again. The website is still work in progress though!
For those who are reading this blog for the first time, this post is a continuation of a three part series on How to become and iPhone app developer. In the previous post we saw how to sign up for an itunes connect account and also setting up the banking and tax information. This post will basically discuss what the next steps are.

Video review of iPhone firmware 3.0
Posted by matblogger in Software, gadgets on March 25th, 2009
Thanks to maxis we Malaysians can now enjoy the iPhone 3G right now. Definitely the iPhone has had several shortcomings since its introduction a couple of years ago. Yet, people have learnt to live with these disadvantages only because of the cool factor of the iPhone and the stability of the OS. But Apple has not ignored repeated requests from users to include the features that is pretty common in other phones. Hence the iPhone firmware release 3.0 has been very well received both by supporters and critics. Even though a sneak preview was shown, the actual firmware will be available for download only sometime in summer. But our friends at engadget have been able to gain access to the beta version and have tried it out and done a nice video review.
